Indonesian Seamen’s Workers Union – Leading the workers union, the Benoa Indonesian Seamen’s Club (KPI), Nyoman Nirka is considered capable of improving the welfare of fishing boat sailors.

DENPASAR – Tools and facilities to pamper and improve the welfare of seamen namely the Seamen’s Club-Port of Benoa has just been in operation and was inaugurated on Tuesday (10/12/2019) by the Indonesian Branch of the Indonesian Seamen’s Club (KPI) Bali.

Chairman of the Indonesian Branch of the Seamen of Bali I Dewa Putu Susila said his party also consolidated the strengthening of organization and membership by strengthening the management of the Benoa Unit of the Indonesian Seamen Workers Union. And local businessman I Nyoman Nirka is believed to be the Chairman of the Benoa Port Indonesian Seamen’s Club Workers Union.

“We believe that Mr. Nyoman Nirka is able to help the Indonesian Seamen’s Club to optimize the protection and welfare of seafarers, especially in the Benoa Port”, Dewa Susila said on the sidelines of the inauguration of the Seamen’s Club-Port of Benoa.

According to Dewa Susila, the establishment of the Benoa Unit of the Indonesian Seamen’s Club refers to international regulations where in a region there are already more than 1000 seamen so one seamen union unit can be formed. Well, in Benoa Harbor there are estimated to be more than 12 thousand local and international fishing boat sailors.

For this reason, Dewa Susila, who is also the Chairman of the Bali Indonesia National Sports Committee in Foreign Relations and Sport Tourism, admitted that he needs to form the Benoa Unit of the Seamen Union of Workers under the Indonesian Branch of the Indonesian Seamen’s Club. As for the purpose, continued Dewa Susila, in order to be able to make a more valid and intensive data collection on seamen the presence of fishing vessels in Benoa Harbor.

“This data collection is important because it relates to the aspect of protection for seamen. So far we do not have valid data, which sometimes makes it difficult for the government and the Indonesian Seamen’s Club to provide protection”, Dewa Susila said.

For him, the existence of the Benoa Unit of the Indonesian Seamen’s Club will also play an important role in supervising how companies treat fishers, especially at the Benoa Port.

“This is a form of the seriousness of the Indonesian Branch of the Indonesian Seamen’s Club of Bali to improve the welfare and protection of seamen”, emphasized Dewa Susila.

Furthermore, the Bali Branch of the Indonesian Seamen’s Club through the Benoa Unit of the Indonesian Seamen’s Club will also aggressively provide education to seamen and prospective seamen as well as boat manning agent companies and fishing boat owner companies how important the Sea Work Agreement is to be enforced.

“So far the most problematic are fishing boat sailors. So it is very important that they are educated to understand the Sea Work Agreement which is to protect them while working on the ship”, he added.

He also revealed the reason for Nyoman Nirka, who is believed to be the Chairman of the Benoa Unit of the Indonesian Seamen’s Club Workers. First, Nyoman Nirka is a local businessman who has been poor across as a manning agent and fishing boat entrepreneur.

“With the legitimacy of him (Nyoman Nirka) as Chairman of the Benoa Unit of the Indonesian Seamen Union Workers in order to be able to play a greater role in improving the welfare of fishing vessels at Benoa Harbor”, said Dewa Susila who also has years of experience as a cruise ship sailor.

Secondly, Nyoman Nirka has been active for a long time at the Benoa Harbor so that he understands the ins and outs and various problems related to seamen, especially on fishing vessels in Benoa Harbor. He also hopes that Indonesian sailors must be made a vital subject in maritime-related industries.

“If you see the number that can be said, Indonesian sailors are vital subjects and not complementary objects of the shipping industry”, explained Dewa Susila.

Meanwhile, Chairman of the Indonesian Seamen’s Club Workers Union Benoa I Unit Nyoman Nirka claimed to be ready to carry out the mandate of the Indonesian Seamen’s Club of Bali in order to provide the widest possible benefits for seamen, especially at the Benoa Port. His party is also ready to work together with the Badas Benoa Port Authority and Badas Benoa and related stakeholders so that they can jointly improve the welfare and protection of seamen in this region.
