“It is positive they were infected there (China),” said Terawan at Halim Perdanakusumah Airport, Jakarta, Saturday (02/15/2020).

Terawan explained the conclusion was based on calculating the 14-day incubation period since the Chinese tourist left Bali on January 28. Moreover, until now there has not been a single citizen in Bali who is known to have contracted the virus while in Bali.

COVID-19, the official WHO designation for the new virus, first emerged in Wuhan China in 2019.

“Until today, it has been 18 days since they departed from Bali. Then there is nothing symptomatic there (Bali). What does it mean? They were not infected in Bali” he said.

The first information explaining that a positive Chinese citizen contracted the Corona virus after a visit to Bali came from the authorities of Anhui Province, China, which was published officially in the Anhui administration, Weibo on Thursday (6/2/2020).

At that time, the Huanian Disease Control Center reported that a patient named Jin had tested positive for the Corona virus on Wednesday (5/2) which said that he had previously been on holiday in Bali for about a week, from January 22 to January 28, 2020.

The Head of Bali Provincial Health Office, I Ketut Suwarjaya dismissed the notion of a Chinese tourist named Jin, exposed to the Corona virus while on a vacation in Bali.  “I reiterate that the Chinese tourists were not infected with the corona virus while on holiday in Bali,” he said on Thursday (2/13/2020).

He assumed, this tourist left Bali on January 28, 2020 to China.  Word got out on February 5, 2020 that the patient concerned had contracted the corona virus after he was already in his country.

This means that eight days after leaving Bali, news of the tourists spread the corona virus. While it is known that the normal incubation period of the virus is 3 to 7 days, but the tourist had already departed from Bali for 8 days.

“The second assumption, if we use the incubation period for 14 days is quite long, in Bali there were no corona cases at that time. And until this time there has not been a case, “he said.

According to him at this time based on laboratory examinations throughout Indonesia there were about 70 people examined related corona virus, 14 people from Bali, all of them the results have so far been negative

Bali projecting huge losses due to COVID-19 outbreak: Tourism Board

Tourism, one of the biggest contributors to Bali’s economy, is starting to dry up amid the global health emergency caused by the COVID-19 outbreak, according to the Bali Tourism Board.

The Board said yesterday that the temporary ban imposed on flights to and from mainland China could potentially result in a major losses for tourism on the Island.  “As a result of the ban on Chinese tourists, there has been a significant decline in arrivals. Bali is expected to lose up to US$73 million per month, starting from next month,”  Chairwoman Ida Bagus Agung Partha Adnyana said.

According to Adnyana, the figure was derived from the assumption that each Chinese tourist spends an average of IDR10 million during their stay on the island, meaning that Bali is expected to see a decrease of around one hundred thousand Chinese tourists each month due to the COVID-19 outbreak.

Travelers from China were the second largest group of foreign visitors behind Australians with nearly nearly 1.2 million passing through Ngurah Rai International Airport last year.

Adnyana added there have been up to 40 thousand cancellations of hotel bookings in Bali since the COVID-19 scare.  In 2018, Indonesia took in US$16.7 billion from tourism, about roughly 40 percent of which was contributed by Bali.

The COVID-19 outbreak has killed more than 1,300 people and infected over 64,400 as of this afternoon. The disease has so far affected at least 27 other countries around the world, including Singapore and Malaysia. Indonesia has yet to confirm any cases of  COVID-19 infections.

Bali Health Agency, Ketut Suarjaya, said the agency was currently trying to figure out the travel history and the activities of the patient, identified only as Jin, according to information obtained by The Jakarta Post on Wednesday.

“We have to check on the dates when he was in Bali. The incubation period of the Covid-19 is 14 days. We don’t know yet where exactly he was infected. We don’t know yet whether he was infected with the Covid-19 before he went to Bali. There is a possibility that he got the virus when he returned to China,” Suarjaya said.

“If we look at his [flight history], he departed from Wuhan on Jan. 22, and returned back to his country on Jan. 28, I think he did not become infected in Bali. If so, he must have shown some symptoms when he was in Bali,” he added.

Suarjaya said there was a small possibility that the man was infected before he went to Bali.

“However, we will recheck again the facts. We will follow up the information. We will trace all places he visited. […] And of course, we will raise our alertness,” he said.

Currently two Chinese patients are being treated in the isolation room of Sanglah Hospital in Bali. The two patients were admitted last night. Since the COVID-19 outbreak,  the hospital has treated 32 patients who have shown symptoms of the disease, all previous 30 tests have come back negative.

Authorities in Anhui province, China, reported that the Chinese national who visited Bali late last month had tested positive for the virus that causes COVID-19.

The administration announced via Weibo on Feb. 6 that the Huainan Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported on Feb. 5 that Jin flew on Lion Air flight JT2618 from Wuhan – the epicenter of the COVID-19 outbreak – to Bali on Jan. 22. The patient stayed on the island for about a week before flying on Garuda Indonesia flight GA858 from Bali to Shanghai on Jan. 28.

The patient was found to have been infected with the disease by Huainan CDC according to the Weibo post.

“For passengers on the aforementioned flights, please enact preventative measures immediately,” wrote the Anhui administration on its Weibo account, which is a local version of Twitter.

“Please don’t go out for a while and if you get a fever, go to the nearest hospital,” the statement said. “Please use masks when you travel to the medical center and don’t use public transportation,” it went on.

COVID-19 stands for Corona Virus Disease 19. “Having a name matters to prevent the use of other names that can be inaccurate or stigmatizing,” said Director-General of the WHO, Tedros Adhanom
