Badung – To support and preserve the mangrove tree area, State Electricity Company (PLN) Bali Distribution Main Unit (UID) planted mangrove tree seedlings in Kampoeng Kepiting, Tuban, Badung, Thursday (11/28/2019).

General Manager of PLN UID Bali, Nyoman Suwarjoni Astawa, said that this time around 13 thousand seedlings were planted in partnership with the Wanasari Ecotourism Fishermen Group, Tuban. This was also done to coincide with the National Tree Planting Day 2019 and PLN throughout Indonesia participated in planting trees.

“We from PLN Bali hope that this place which was once a mangrove forest area can return green and restore its habitat”, said Nyoman Suwarjoni after planting mangrove seedlings.

Nyoman Suwarjoni asserted, PLN Bali also has social and environmental functions, one of them which is through environmental services like this. To support the restoration of mangrove forests, on this occasion PLN Bali also handed over aid to preserve the planting and maintenance of mangrove seedlings in the amount of IDR 120 million.

“Today we have also submitted it to the Wanasari Fishermen Group and hope that the mangrove seeds that we planted can grow optimally so that our earth will return to green and our ecosystems will also be able to develop properly”, said the man from Seririt, Buleleng.

According to him, planting of mangrove tree seeds carried out by PLN Bali and the Wanasari Fishermen Group in the morning to avoid high tides. Planting is done in the middle of the sea when the water is receding, or about 200 meters from the beach.

“We have jointly planted mangrove seedlings and will then be continued and cared for by friends of the Wanasari Fishermen Group. We were very impressed because there were some mangrove trees that were not very tall but were around 4-5 years old”, he said.

On this occasion, Nyoman Suwarjoni regretted the damage that occurred in the area of mangrove forests because of human activity that only concerned with the economy but ignored nature and the environment. Even though to be able to grow optimally, mangroves need a long time to grow.

He further explained that Mangrove plants as one of the plants that have sturdy roots, also have a function as a barrier to sea waves, a storm and tsunami barrier. Therefore, Nyoman Suwarjoni said that mangrove forests are the main ecosystem that supports life mainly in coastal areas.

“We hope that the mangrove trees that we plant today can grow optimally. Because we know that only about 10 to 20 percent of mangrove seedlings can grow. The main enemy is weeds because it covers the seedlings so the seeds become hot and cannot breathe and then fall out and dry”, explained Nyoman Suwarjoni.

To that end, Nyoman Suwarjoni invites all parties to actively participate in protecting the mangrove forest area as a habitat or place for marine animals to protect and breed, as well as for tourism and education.

As is known, Mangroves are dicotyledonous plants that live in brackish habitat. Mangrove forests are tropical coastal vegetation communities that are able to grow and develop in muddy coastal tides. There are many benefits of mangroves on marine and coastal ecosystems. Among them protect the land from erosion and abrasion, prevent intrusion of seawater, and as a place to live and breed a variety of wildlife such as fish, shrimp, crabs and birds. Mangrove forests also provide benefits for education and tourism.
