Jakarta – MotoGP legend Mick Doohan said he was happy that the most prestigious two-wheeled race in the world would be held again in Indonesia at Mandalika Circuit, Lombok on the calendar of the upcoming 2021 season.

The five-time premier world champion was active as a racer from 1989-1999, and was once a 500cc GP champion at the Sentul Circuit in 1996. The Sentul Circuit itself hosted MotoGP for two years from 1996 to 1997.

“I think it’s fantastic that MotoGP can come back here, with a huge fan base not only from MotoGP but also from manufacturers”, said the Australian legend when met in Jakarta on Saturday.

During his visit in Jakarta, Doohan, accompanied by Dorna Sports Sporting Director Carlos Ezpeleta, ITDC Managing Director Abdulbar M, Mansoer and Mandaliga Grand Prix Association CEO Ricky Baheramsyah attended the MGPA pre-launching event, an ITDC subsidiary that was housed as the operator of all events held at the Mandalika.

Doohan also witnessed how the race simulation on the 4.3km road circuit with 18 turns and expressed his comments.

“We see something different … the track is flowing enough, it will be fast enough. In general it will present a good race.”

According to Doohan, of course, each circuit has an ideal part for overtaking and other supporting elements during the race.

“But the hardest part in my opinion is putting all of that together to help you lead on the last lap to the last bend to the finish line first. You have to lead to the last meter.”

“Each circuit has different ingredients that must be combined to make the perfect ‘food’,” Doohan said.

Carlos Ezpeleta agrees and believes that the Mandalika Circuit will present a tight race where the results will be determined in the final round.

“That is what all fans have been waiting for, so I think this track, in the midst of all that view, will be amazing, and will present a good race,” Ezpeleta said.

ITDC said that if the Mandalika Circuit construction is still running according to schedule and currently has entered ground works progress by 30 percent.

The ITDC was assured of holding a MotoGP race at KEK Mandalika after signing an agreement with Dorna on January 28 this year in Madrid to host MotoGP for five years starting in 2021 and also received a contract to hold the FIM Motul Superbike World Championship (WSBK).

MGPA itself is tasked with managing and operating the Mandalika Circuit through organizing motor racing and other events.

“We are confident that we can pursue the target of completing the construction of the Mandalika Circuit by the end of 2020 so that we can hold a MotoGP race in 2021”, Ricky said.
