Awaiting sentence inside Bali’s notorious Kerobokan jail is a far cry from an ideal Christmas, but the day has been made a little brighter for two Australian men as they received visits from loved ones.

Former Melbourne nightclub manager David Van Iersel, who’s accused of cocaine possession and due to learn his fate in less than a fortnight, was spotted kissing and embracing his Australian girlfriend.

The 38-year-old and his partner had attended the prison’s traditional Christmas Day service in which 120 prisoners were rewarded with small sentence cuts for good behaviour.

Co-accused Will Cabantog was seen sitting outside the service sipping coffee and appearing reflective before a woman arrived and they went behind closed doors.

Also at the ceremony was Bali 9 life sentence member Matthew Norman who wished waiting media a “merry Christmas”.

Last week Cabantog, 36, broke down in tears as Bali prosecutors declared him and Van Iersel “victims of the drug trade” and recommended they serve only light sentences.

If a panel of judges follows the suggestions, Cabantog will spend just a year and a half behind bars and Van Iersal a year and two months after defence teams claimed throughout trial that the men were addicts in need of help.

The friends were allegedly found with just over a gram of cocaine in a Canggu nightclub sting in July, and tested positive to using the drug.

During the Kerobokan prison service it was announced that Australian Sara Connor had been rewarded a one-month sentence cut, but the Byron Bay mother of two didn’t venture from her cell for the ceremony.

She’s expected to be released late next year, four years after she and her then-boyfriend were found guilty of killing a Balinese policeman on Kuta beach.
