JAKARTA – Academics and business practitioner Rhenald Kasali advised business operators in the tourism sector to be aware of the surge in tourists ahead of the year-end holidays. Because, travelers want a happy atmosphere and make the best use of vacation time. If there are too many tourists, tourists will lose hope.

Likewise, locals are not likely to be angry if the tourists behave arbitrarily. “The surge in travelers at the end of the year can disperse that hope. Traffic will be everywhere and there will be nowhere if the carrying capacity is not increased”, Rhenald Kasali said in a press release on Wednesday (11/27/2019). Rhenald gave an example, the anger of local residents had occurred in a variety of leading tourist destinations. Call it Venice, Spain, France, the Netherlands and Croatia.

The issue is traffic jams, prices soar, tourist attractions are only made selfies, and littering. To alleviate this, finally the mayors in various places took the attitude to remember turmoil not only in the real world, but also the virtual world. “They finally took a stand to limit tourist arrivals, even cruise ships were subject to high premiums. The spread of Airbnb was limited. Prohibitions were issued to protect city dwellers from discomfort”, Rhenald said.

Then what about Indonesia? When referring to the Tourism Density Index data released by the UN World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), the surge of tourists to Indonesia is not as high as the cities of Croatia , Iceland, Denmark, Singapore, Greece and Spain.

Indonesia’s ratio at level 23 is still be aligned with potential tourism countries such as Egypt, Kenya and Tanzania. However, Indonesia’s tourist destinations must be vigilant given the very high enthusiasm of local travelers. The number of visits by domestic tourists has sped so fast following the improvement in infrastructure, the presence of low cost carriers, sharing rides, and sharing-based apartments.

“Density index on tourism in Bali has reached an alarming number, which is ranked 4th. Moreover, the carrying capacity of Bali for infrastructure development is somewhat limited, while the power of Bali’s Enchantment as a major world visit destination continues to improve”, said Rhenald. Create a new Bali Therefore, Rhenald suggested that planners and regional leaders need to be careful in welcoming the new era of millennial arrivals.

Businessmen also need to change their strategy by creating a new Bali. “Bali tourism entrepreneurs need to change their strategy from exploitation of Bali to become orchestra-tors who also take tourists to new destinations outside Bali, to get new sources of income”, advises Rhenald. As for the government, it seems willing to create a New Bali standard that is not inferior to the current Bali. “The state needs to create a standard for new Balinese which is not far from what Bali can provide. This certainly requires a change in mindset and entrepreneurship”, he concluded.
