Chen is serving a life sentence for drug trafficking after being jailed as part of the infamous Bali Nine. Brendon Luke Johnson was jailed for selling cocaine in Bali and Robert Andrew Fiddes Ellis was locked up for 15 years for serious child sex crimes. The jail is dealing with a serious outbreak of Covid-19, with as many as 84 men and 22 females testing positive out of the 1,400 person population. Kerobokan prison warden Yulius Sahruzah said the virus was detected inside prison walls last week. Initially, we suspected that there was coronavirus in the jail because of complaints of inmates with fever, shortness of breath and some who had lost their sense of taste and smell,’ he said. We then carried out a rapid testing last week.

Tora Solutions’ John McLeod, who provides assistance to Australians in overseas jails, said prisoners were concerned about being put in isolation wings with other infected people.Inmates were allegedly tested for the virus weeks ago but only received the positive results on Wednesday.

Many of them believe they may no longer be ill as they had the tests weeks ago.Mr McLeod took aim at the Foreign Affairs Department, claiming they failed to take any action during the pandemic until just recently. All DFAT has done is provide hand sanitiser two weeks ago, months after this pandemic started,’ he said. It’s not good enough in a prison that is rife with the disease. Jail officials are trying their best but they lack the resources. Bali’s head of the Law and Human Rights Ministry’s Mr Suprapto said it was nearly impossible to engage in physical distancing in a jail facility.
